Following the announcement that the opposition Multi-Party Charter (MPC) may invite observers from G7 countries to monitor the May election, the governing ANC said it would ask its ‘friends’ to also send people to observe.

The MPC has approached a number of countries to send election observers. Opposition parties which are not part of the MPC have also expressed concerns over the possibility that the 29 May election will not be free and fair.

Obed Bapela, the head of the ANC’s international relations committee, said that he found the MPC’s request odd as South African elections since 1994 had all been free and fair.

Bapela said that while the ANC had not contacted the countries it considered ‘friends’ as yet, the matter was being given consideration by the party.
