The Balkan country of Bosnia and Herzegovina is to begin talks about joining the EU.

The country first applied to join the bloc eight years ago and the European Commission recently recommended that accession talks begin.

The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, said: ‘Today’s decision is a key step forward on your EU path. Now the hard work needs to continue so Bosnia and Herzegovina steadily advances, as your people want.’

It could be some time before Bosnia and Herzegovina join the EU, as there are a number of political and economic reforms that would still need to be completed.

Other countries which have applied to join the EU and are in various stages of negotiation are: Albania, Georgia, Kosovo, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, Turkey, and Ukraine.
