Elon Musk, the enigmatic South African-born billionaire, is to visit India.

Musk, posting on X (formerly Twitter, the social media site which he bought) said that he would be visiting India and would be meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He did not give a date for the meeting.

Musk owns Tesla, one of the world’s major producers of electric vehicles. In 2021 he said that high import duties had stopped Tesla from launching in the world’s most populous country.

India recently cut import taxes on electric vehicles and announced plans to begin local production of these vehicles.

According to the BBC, an Indian government official confirmed that a meeting between Musk and Modi would take place at the end of this month. It would be at Modi’s official residence.

Tesla is likely to want to invest in India soon, as it battles competition and declining sales in other parts of the world.

India goes to the polls later this month in the world’s largest democratic exercise. Modi is widely expected to secure a third term as Prime Minister.
