Major-General Aharon Haliva, the head of Israeli military intelligence and a 38-year veteran has resigned over the Hamas attack on Israel on 7 October last year.

He is the latest senior Israeli military and intelligence official to accept responsibility over the attacks, having failed to foresee and prevent the deadliest attack on civilians in Israel’s history. He is the first senior figure to resign, although observers believe that more people will resign once the main military operation in Gaza is completed.

In his resignation letter, Haliva said: ‘The intelligence division under my command did not live up to the task we were entrusted with. I have carried that black day with me ever since.’

He will remain in the post until a successor is appointed.
