The ANC easily defended a ward in Madibeng (Brits) in North West on Wednesday.

It was the only by-election held.

The ANC won 70% of the vote, compared to the 57% of the vote it won in the 2021 local government elections.

The EFF won 28%, a slight decline on the 29% it won in 2021.

The only other party that stood in the by-election was Jacob Zuma’s MK Party, which managed just over 1% of the vote.

The ANC will be happy with the result, only a fortnight before the national election. MK’s dismal performance gives more credence to the theory that it has little support outside of KwaZulu-Natal.
