French police shot and killed a man in the French city of Rouen after he was caught trying to burn down a synagogue.

Police were called at just before 7am on Friday when smoke was seen rising from the building. When police arrived at the scene, a man armed with an iron bar and a knife ran at the police, who shot and killed him.

Firefighters brought the fire under control, but damage to the interior of the building was described as ‘significant’.

Rouen mayor, Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol, said that the attack had not just affected the Jewish community but had left the whole city ‘battered and in shock’.
