Robert Fico, the Prime Minister of Slovakia, who was shot last week in an attempted assassination attempt is reportedly out of danger.

Initially it had been feared that he would not survive the attempt on his life.

Fico was shot after greeting supporters in a small town in Slovakia. He was shot four times by a man identified as 71-year-old poet, Juraj Cintula, by Slovak media.

Fico has been a controversial figure in Slovak politics, having served as Prime Minister from 2006 to 2010, again from 2012 to 2018, and was re-elected in 2023.

Recent rhetoric seemed to indicate that Fico was moving Slovakia into the orbit of Moscow, with Fico saying that his government would end support for Ukraine in its war against Russia.

Deputy Prime Minister, Robert Kalinak, was quoted as saying: ‘We can consider his (Fico’s) condition stable with a positive prognosis. We all feel a bit more relaxed now.’
