Chris Pappas, the mayor of uMngeni, the only DA-run municipality in KwaZulu-Natal, has confirmed he will stay on in his current position.

Pappas had been the DA’s candidate for Premier in the province and was first on the party’s list for the provincial legislature. However, in a Facebook post he said he was not going to take up his seat in the provincial legislature and would continue his work in the Midlands municipality.

On Facebook Pappas said: ‘We have a 5 year project in uMngeni that is not complete yet. We have become a beacon of hope for KZN and South Africa. We have a lot of work still to do.’

Pappas has generally been seen as one of the DA’s rising stars and has been touted as a future party leader by some observers.
