The United Nations (UN) has warned that a wider regional conflict could explode out of fighting in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

In a report the UN has alleged that the M23 rebel group is being backed by both Uganda and Rwanda, with accusations that 4,000 Rwandan troops are fighting in the DRC alongside the rebels.

The UN claims that number of Rwandan troops exceeds the estimated 3,000 men that the M23 group has.

It has also said that Burundian troops are fighting alongside DRC troops against M23 and Rwandan troops, which has further exacerbated regional tensions.

South African troops are also in the region as part of a Southern African Development Community (SADC) peacekeeping force.
