The City of Johannesburg forensic investigator who was murdered last week was on the verge of exposing a “guns for hire” syndicate within the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), according to City Press.

The newspaper said that it had reliably learnt that, at the time of his murder, 55-year-old Zenzele Benedict Sithole was working on a case of the metro armour being used by criminals to commit cash-in-transit heists. The criminals were being aided and abetted by members of the police department.

Sithole was part of the city’s Group Forensics and Investigation Services (GFIS), which is tasked with probing fraud, corruption and maladministration within the police department.

City Press quoted “an insider” as saying: “It was definitely a hit. They wanted him dead because he was going to expose them. They were hiring out metro guns to criminals to commit heists and got money in return.”
