The European Parliament on Thursday re-elected German politician Ursula von der Leyen to a second five-year term as the president of the European Union’s executive commission.
Von der Leyen described her victory as “pro-European, pro-Ukraine (and) pro-rule of law.” She was backed by 401 members of the 720-member parliament, after a speech in which she promised strong leadership for dealing with the crisis facing Europe.
Von der Leyen’s re-election came despite some strong results from the more right-wing parties in the European parliament who are opposed to her. These gains were in part offset by gains for the centre-right which supported Von der Leyen.
