Tesla, the company founded by South African-born billionaire Elon Musk, has said that it will start manufacturing humanoid robots from next year. They will then go on sale in 2026.

On X (formerly Twitter) Musk said: “Tesla will have genuinely useful humanoid robots in low production for Tesla internal use next year and, hopefully, high production for other companies in 2026.”

The Tesla-manufactured robot, which will be called Optimus, will perform “unsafe, repetitive or boring tasks”, according to the company.

Musk previously said that the robots would be mass produced and would cost less than $20 000 to buy.
