A number of pound notes with King Charles III’s face have been auctioned at values far more than their face value.
Bank notes featuring King Charles III entered into circulation in June, but new notes with low serial numbers are sought after by collectors and these are what were put up for auction.
Banknotes with a face value of nearly £80 000 pounds were auctioned off. The auction raised over £900 000.
The proceeds of the auction will be shared by a number of charities identified by the Bank of England.
It is the first time that the face of the monarch on English bank notes has changed. It was only in 1960 that it became common practice to feature the face of the monarch on notes. King Charles III’s mother, Elizabeth II, has been on the notes since 1960. Her picture has now been replaced by that of her son, following her death in 2022.
