Democratic Alliance leader in the Johannesburg City Council, Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku, says ActionSA and the African National Congress are in a de facto coalition.
This comes after ActionSA helped the ANC to elect Dada Morero to the mayorship of the city, and subsequently had one of its councillors elected to the speakership.
On Wednesday, with help from the ANC and the EFF, ActionSA’s Nobuhle Mthembu beat the DA’s Nonhlanhla Sifumba to take the speakership.
Said Kayser-Echeozonjoku: “I am not confident in the relationship between the ANC, EFF, ActionSA coalition. Whether ActionSA wants to admit or not, they are in a coalition with the ANC in Johannesburg by virtue of having this agreement and having the speaker who governs what happens in council.”
She said that the new speaker was not experienced, and the task would be tough. As the ANC and ActionSA were not aligned on all issues, Mthembu was “in for a very bumpy ride”.
