One of the reasons South Africans have been spared load-shedding for more than 140 days is that Eskom replaced nearly half of its power station managers, according to Eskom board chairperson Mteto Nyati.

News24 reports that Nyati made this revelation in an online interview with Nick Balkin, the chief investment officer at asset management company Foord. The interview forms part of a webinar series.

According to the report, Nyati said the core of the problems at Eskom was its people and not an ageing coal fleet.

Nyati is quoted as saying: “Possibly 45% of …the power station managers were changed.”

He also indicated that the best people were redeployed to the six worst-performing power stations, which contributed to 70% of failures in the coal fleet.
