Mlungisi Makhanya, the leader of eSwatini’s political opposition, People’s United Democratic Movement (Pudemo), who is living in exile in South Africa, is in hospital after being poisoned.
A spokesperson for Pudemo said Makhanya was in a stable but critical condition in hospital in Pretoria.
The incident happened ahead of planned protests due to be held next month. The protests will call for multi-party elections in Africa’s last absolute monarchy.
The eSwatini government denied involvement.
