Kenya has said it will send more police to Haiti. A number of Kenyan police are already in Haiti, where they have been deployed to help local authorities combat gangs which have taken over much of the country.
Kenyan police have been deployed incrementally in Haiti since June, and the latest deployment of 600 will bring the number of Kenyans in the country to 1 000.
Several other countries have also collectively committed 1 900 troops.
Central government authority has broken down in Haiti following the assassination of President Jovenel Moise, who was killed in 2021. It is believed that his killers were Colombians associated with drug gangs. The gap in authority in the country and capital has been filled by gangs and warlords.
The United Nations (UN) Security Council will meet soon to decide whether to deploy a full UN mission in the country next year.
