Three Springboks have been nominated for Rugby Player of the Year by World Rugby.
Only four players were nominated, with three being Springboks, reflecting South Africa’s recent domination of world rugby.
The nominated players are veteran lock Eben Etzebeth; flanker Pieter-Steph du Toit; and wing Cheslin Kolbe. Du Toit was named World Player of the Year in 2019.
Caelan Doris of Ireland was also nominated.
Observers were surprised by the exclusion of prop forward Ox Nche, who many believe has been the standout player in world rugby this year.
One South African was also nominated for Breakthrough Player of the Year. Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu was nominated for this award.
