One of Nelson Mandela’s grandsons, 33-year-old Mbuso Mandela, was one of 5 people arrested at the late president’s home in Houghton this week for hijacking a vehicle and being in possession of various illicit items.

Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officers traced the location of a Toyota Corolla that was hijacked to the house in Houghton, Johannesburg.

Mbuso, his girlfriend, a former employee of a vehicle tracking company, and two others were taken into custody after a tracker installed in the vehicle led police to the property.

“They allegedly hijacked the vehicle and drove around with the victim – apparently trying to locate the tracking device, which they found. The problem for them was that the vehicle had [another] tracking device, which they were not aware of”, said to the JMPD.

In 2015, Mandela was arrested on a charge of allegedly rape of a 15-year-old girl. He was also arrested after the mother of his two children filed a maintenance suit against him for failure to support them.

In 2022, he was arrested for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and drugs.

Among the suspected stolen items found during the raid were used needles and syringes, an unlicensed gun, a TV, DVD player, soundbar, and Apple TV box.

The JMPD said officers received information from a vehicle tracking company regarding the location of a white Toyota Corolla that was hijacked on Wednesday morning on Louis Botha Avenue in Oaklands.
