The new Prime Minister of Greenland, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, who became the island’s new leader after an election last month, has said Greenland will “determine our own future”.

This comes after US President, Donald Trump, again refused to rule out the use of military force to seize the territory, and as his Vice-President, JD Vance, conducted a visit to a US base in Greelnland last month.

Nielsen said: “President Trump says that the United States ‘is getting Greenland’. Let me be clear: The United States is not getting it. We do not belong to anyone else. We determine our own future.”

Greenland is a semi-autonomous territory governed by Denmark.

The Danish foreign minister, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, said Copenhagen was “open to criticism” but “we do not appreciate the tone in which it is being delivered — this is not how you speak to your close allies.”
