Election day for this year’s local government elections is officially a public holiday.

A statement released by the Presidency on Monday said: ‘The president calls on all registered voters to use the opportunity of the public holiday to exercise their democratic right and civic duty by voting in this election that empowers citizens to elect new leadership and influence service delivery where they live.’

The statement also called on South Africans to adhere to Covid-19 protocols when they do vote.

Voting days are traditionally public holidays in South Africa and this is the first time in post-apartheid history that an election will be held on a Monday. (Traditionally they are held on Wednesdays).
