Despite winning four out of five of their matches at the ongoing T20 World Cup in the Middle East, South Africa will miss out on the tournament’s semi-finals.

On Saturday South Africa beat tournament favourites, England, by ten runs, in each team’s final game of the group stages. South Africa scored 189/2 in their twenty overs, and restricted England to 179/8 in their reply. Rassie van der Dussen scored 94 not out, while Kagiso Rabada took a hat-trick in the final over of England’s innings.

The team’s opening loss against Australia, as well as the relatively tepid way they chased a small Bangladesh total, cost the Proteas a chance of making it to the knockout stages of the tournament.

England, Australia, and South Africa each finished with eight points from five matches, but thanks to South Africa’s inferior net run rate, England and Australia advance.

England will play New Zealand in the semi finals, while Australia will face in-form Pakistan, who have not lost a match in the tournament.
