Tensions are running high between Poland and Belarus as migrants in Belarus try enter Poland.

Poland claims that the migrants, mainly from the Middle East and Asia, are being encouraged to go to the Polish border by the Belarussian government, an act which Poland describes as a ‘hostile activity’.

Lithuania and Latvia, which also share borders with Belarus, have also said that there has been a surge in migrants from outside Europe in recent times.

The European Union has accused Belarus, effectively the last totalitarian state in Europe, of facilitating the passage of migrants to its neighbours, in retaliation for sanctions that have been placed on the country.

Migrants have also claimed they have been helped to cross into other countries by Belarussian troops, but Minsk has denied this charge.

Poland has reacted to the increase in migrants by building barbed-wire fences and has now also sent troops to the region.
