The Democratic Alliance (DA), South Africa’s biggest opposition party is set to shed staff as it restructures.

According to City Press an internal email sent to staff this week said that the party was building ‘a structure that is more suited’ to the party’s requirements.

The email, sent by the party’s federal council chairperson and former leader, Helen Zille, said that the organization had decided to ‘initiate a section 189A restructuring process in terms of Labour Relations Act’.

The party had already announced in February this year that it would be embarking on a restructuring process, after having to retrench 51 employees in September last year. However, Dion George, the federal finance chairperson of the party, denied that the restructuring was because of financial difficulties. George said: ‘Financially, the DA is not in a crisis. Our donations are robust.’

The DA has faced some difficulties since last year’s general election where it saw its support drop for the first time in its history.
