An archeological study has found that Ancient Israelites burned cannabis as part of rituals, over two millennia ago.

A substance was found in a 2 700-year-old-temple in Tel Arad. Tests indicated that it was cannabis, which included the psychoactive compound, THC. Researchers believe that it was used during rituals and burned to make worshippers high.

The temple was discovered in the 1960s but this is the first report that cannabis (or dagga) was used in worship by Jewish people of the time.

Thanks to the dry climate of the region, as well as the way in which the substances were stored in the temple, researchers were able to test it and conclude that it was, indeed, cannabis.
