Natty dresser former home affairs minister Malusi Gigaba paid for expensive suits in cash, after visiting the Saxonwold compound of the controversial Gupta family, according to an unnamed witness in the Zondo Commission’s inquiry into state capture.

Gigaba yesterday denied any wrongdoing.

Gigaba’s former bodyguard, who was identified at ‘Witness 3’ for security purposes, told the commission that the former minister was a regular at the Gupta compound between 2010 and 2014, according to a TimesLIVE report.

The witness alleged that Gigaba instructed him and other guards not to record his trips to the Guptas in the log book. He also told the commission that he once witnessed the minister pay for his suits in cash in Sandton after a visit to the Guptas.

The report noted that, while Gigaba had denied doing any favours for the family or receiving any money from them, his office had been accused in 2018 of fast-tracking visas for the Gupta family and their business associates from India.

In a statement yesterday, Gigaba said: ‘I strongly deny any suggestions or insinuation that there is anything unlawful that I did. I am in the process of preparing an affidavit in response to the allegations of Witness 3 and have also instructed my legal representatives to simultaneously apply to the Chairperson of the Commission for leave to cross examine Witness 3.’
