India yesterday set the record for the world’s highest single-day rise in infections, reporting 78 761 new infections in 24 hours.

AFP reports that India, with 3.5 million cases, is the third most infected nation after the United States (US) and Brazil. It has reported more than 63 000 deaths.

The report said the US set the last daily record on 17 July, with 77 638 daily infections.

According to data from Johns Hopkins University, global infections reached 25 009 250 yesterday morning, with more than 840 000 deaths.

In South Africa, positive cases grew yesterday by 2 505 to a cumulative total of 625  056 (with 538 604 recoveries). Deaths rose by 47 to 14 028.

The highest tally of cases is in Gauteng (209 648), followed by KwaZulu-Natal (112 726), the Western Cape (105 908) and the Eastern Cape (86 060).
