Western Cape Transport and Public Works MEC Bonginkosi Madikizela has been re-elected as the provincial leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA).

Community Safety MEC Albert Fritz was elected as his deputy at the party’s virtual provincial congress on Saturday.

Madikizela said after the result was announced: ‘We have to unite as the party if we are serious about saving SA and if we are serious about governing the Western Cape, if we are serious about making sure that come 2021, we govern all the municipalities in the Western Cape.’

His challenger, legislature speaker Masizole Mnqasela, was rumoured earlier in the week to be the target of an alleged assassination plot, but DA federal council chairperson Helen Zille said the party had found no evidence to support the claim.
