Soon after being paroled, less than three months into a two-year sentence for assaulting a Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor, former African National Congress (ANC) councillor Andile Lingisa was back in the limelight for calling on President Cyril Ramaphosa to stop his ‘attack’ on his predecessor, Jacob Zuma.

Lungisa was jailed for assaulting DA councillor Rano Kayser by bashing him over the head with a heavy water jug.

Shortly after his release on parole from Port Elizabeth’s North End Prison, Lungisa, flanked by ANC members including Des van Rooyen and Supra Mahumapelo, called on Ramaphosa to stop the ‘attack’ on Zuma.

He added: ‘I went to prison because we fought the DA.’

The Daily Maverick noted that Lungisa emerged from jail much as he entered, surrounded by supportive comrades, and using his criminal conviction to further his political goals while continuing to show a lack of remorse for his crime.
