On Sunday, Rwanda Emergency Management Ministry reported that about 8 000 people have crossed into Rwanda from DRC seeking refuge following a volcano eruption.

Nyiragongo is reported to be the most active and dangerous on the continent because its lava flows reach up to 100 kilometres an hour.

Reports say more than 100 people have died and parts of the city have been destroyed. Hundreds of children are also reported to be missing or separated from their families after Mount Nyiragongo erupted on Saturday.

‘Although there is no massive panic movement, people are still worried’, said Tom Peyre-Costa, the Norwegian Refugee Council’s spokesperson for west and central Africa.

The lava flows from Nyiragongo stopped on Monday and most Congolese are reported to be returning home.
