The Western Cape Department of Human Settlements has on Monday reported a spike in the number of attempts at land grabs in the last month.
It has been reported that people have attempted to move onto Cape Town land illegally on at least 94 occasions over the past month.
The MEC Tertuis Simmers says, however, that the number is way down compared to last year’s figures., The department reports that between July 2020 and the second week of May 2021, there were 1 177 illegal attempts to occupy state-owned land.
“The massive reduction in the number of attempts shows our efforts to prevent these invasions and secure provincially owned land and property are starting to bear fruit. However, we remain concerned,” said Simmers.
