The Hong Kong police are investigating an incident in that territory where the national anthem of China was booed.

According to reports a crowd had gathered at a shopping mall on Monday to watch a fencing event at the current Olympics, featuring Hong Kong’s Edgar Cheung (he went on to win gold in his event).

When the Chinese national anthem was played some people in the crowd jeered and booed and some chanted ‘We are Hong Kong’. There was also reports that the British colonial flag had been waved.

Under a recently passed security law it is illegal to insult the Chinese anthem and those found guilty could be jailed for three years and fined up to R90 000.

According to the BBC Hong Kong police were collecting footage from mall security cameras to investigate this dastardly crime.
