British tennis star Andy Murray has said players should be vaccinated against Covid-19 as part of their responsibility to the public.

Murray, who faces Stefanos Tsitsipas in the first round of the US Open today, was speaking after the US Tennis Association’s announcement on Friday that all fans must have received at least one dose in order to enter the grounds.

According to The Guardian, fewer than half of professional players have been vaccinated. The BBC reports that many are reluctant to have the jab, fearing that side-effects could disrupt their seasons.

Murray, who is fully vaccinated, said: ‘I’m hoping that more players choose to have it in the coming months.’

He added: ‘I feel like I’m enjoying kind of a fairly normal life. Whereas for the players that haven’t, it’s different. I’m sure they’ll be frustrated with that.

‘Ultimately I guess the reason why all of us are getting vaccinated is to look out for the wider public. We have a responsibility as players that are travelling across the world to look out for everyone else as well.’
