A Botswana court has issued an arrest warrant for Ian Khama, the former President of the country.

Khama, the son of the country’s first post-independence leader, Sir Seretse Khama, faces 14 charges, which include money laundering, handling stolen property, and the possession of illegal firearms.

Khama, who has been living in South Africa since 2021, has denied the charges, saying they are part of a political conspiracy against him.

Khama served as the country’s President from 2008 to 2018 before being succeeded by Mokgweetsi Masisi, who he subsequently fell out with. Khama also left the governing Botswana Democratic Party and joined the Botswana Patriotic Front.

It is believed that Botswana could request that South Africa extradite Khama.
