An Economic Community of West African States commissioner, Abdel-Fatau Musah, this week described the plan proposed by the ruling junta in Niger as a provocation.
The junta’s plan includes a three-year transition period before it is willing to hand power back to civilian rule. ECOWAS has slammed this as far too slow.
Musah said that the Niger coup was “one coup too many for the region” and a stand needed to be taken.
Whilst negotiations are ongoing, an ECOWAS military force from Nigeria, Senegal, Benin and Ivory coast is preparing to intervene in Niger if talks fail.
