Gabon will hold an election in 2025, according to the head of the military junta which runs the country.

Brice Oligui Nguema seized power in a miliary coup in August, deposing Ali Bongo.

Bongo is Nguema’s cousin. Bongo had been President of Gabon since 2009, having succeeded his father who had himself been in power since 1967.

The junta announced the timeline to return to civilian rule earlier this week. However, it said that the timetable was still provisional and would need to be approved by ordinary Gabonese people in a series of town-hall meetings which will take place around the country.

A new constitution is also expected to be voted on in a referendum to be held towards the end of next year.
