Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo has said that African and Caribbean leaders should unite around demands for reparations over injustices committed during European colonialism.

Speaking in Accra, Akufo-Addo said: ‘No amount of money can restore the damage caused by the transatlantic slave trade and its consequences. But surely, this is a matter that the world must confront and can no longer ignore.’

He was speaking at a conference on the issue of reparations.

Akufo-Addo also said that slavery and colonialism had stalled Africa’s progress and this also meant that countries which suffered should be given reparations.

In September he had also told the United Nations General Assembly that no amount of money would make up for what happened but payment would at least acknowledge the fact that something evil had occurred.
