A Chinese lunar probe, which landed on the far side of the moon, has returned to Earth.
The probe, called Chang’e-6, had landed on the far side of the moon, which is still largely unexplored. The far side of the moon is also more challenging to land on as it has fewer flat surfaces than the near side, which continually faces the Earth.
The probe returned with a number of rocks which scientists hope will give some insights into how planets are formed.
The Chang’e-6 probe left Earth in early May and landed on the moon a few weeks later. In total the mission lasted 53 days.
This was the sixth Chinese mission to the moon and the second to land on the lunar far side. China is the first and only country to have successfully landed a probe on the far side of the moon.
China aims to send a manned mission to the moon by 2030, while the United States is aiming to return astronauts to the satellite by 2026.
