Namibia has announced that from April next year it will be requiring a number of countries which previously enjoyed visa-free access to the country, to require visas to enter.

Namibia will be implementing the visa policy on what it calls “non-reciprocating” countries – those whose nationals did not need a visa to visit Namibia, but required Namibians to have visas for visits.

The new policy will affect over 30 countries, mainly in the West.

Visitors will not need to apply for a visa beforehand but will need to get a visa on arrival which will cost R1 600.

Some in the Namibian tourism and hospitality industry have expressed concern that this could reduce the number of tourists coming to visit the country, while others have said it is likely to have no effect on tourist numbers.
