Concerns have been expressed by official sources about possible sabotage after some suspicious activity around water facilities in Germany.

These include damage to a fence near a water storage site in the vicinity of a military base near in Mechernich near Bonn, an air force base being temporarily closed after abnormal water readings, and attempted trespass on a base near Geilenkirchen.

No one has yet been arrested for these incidents.

In Mechernich, residents were warned to boil the water before consuming it; residents have reportedly been stocking up on bottled water in response.

Germany authorities have been concerned about Russian sabotage for some time, given Germany’s support for Ukraine. Minister Nancy Faeser had warned of this prior to the incidents, saying: “The threats we have to protect ourselves against range from espionage, sabotage and cyber attacks to state terrorism.”

Concerns exist that Ukraine’s recent battlefield gains could lead to Russia striking against Ukrainian allies.
