Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India, said this week that he had told Russian President Vladimir Putin that he backs a peaceful and swift resolution to the war in Ukraine.
This came a week after Modi visited Kiev. This was the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to modern Ukraine. Modi also visited Russia last month.
On X (formerly Twitter) Modi said that he “reiterated India’s firm commitment to support an early, abiding and peaceful resolution to the conflict.”
India has in recent years become an increasingly important global power, especially in its role as a counterweight to the rise of China.
