Buckingham Palace has told republican lobbyists in Australia that King Charles believes it is up to the Australian people to decide whether the country remains a constitutional monarchy or becomes a republic, according to reports in the Daily Mail.

This comes a week before King Charles and Queen Camilla begin an official visit to Australia. The future of the monarchy is likely to be an issue in Australia during the royal visit, which includes events in Sydney and Canberra.

The BBC reports that the latest on Australia’s constitutional future emerges from correspondence between the Australian Republic Movement and Buckingham Palace officials, writing on the King’s behalf.

In a letter written in March, the Palace states: “The King appreciated that you took the time to write and asked me to reply on his behalf.

“Please be assured that your views on this matter have been noted very carefully.

“His Majesty, as a constitutional monarch, acts on the advice of his Ministers, and whether Australia becomes a republic is therefore a matter for the Australian public to decide.”
