A biochemist from Virginia in the United States was named Miss America 2020 after winning the judges’ approval with a live science experiment intended to defy stereotypes associated with beauty pageants.

Camille Schrier swept ahead of 50 other contestants to win the final round of judging in Uncasville, Connecticut to claim the title of Miss America, along with a $50 000 scholarship.

Her clinching on-stage experiment demonstrated the catalytic decomposition of hydrogen peroxide.

She intended spending her year as Miss America promoting the drug safety and prevention programme, Mind Your Meds.

According to a BBC report, the Miss America competition last year elected to scrap its swimwear segment and appearance-based judging criteria and to focus rather on contestants’ talents and their passion, intelligence and understanding of the Miss America role.
