South Africans have responded with enthusiasm to President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Heritage Day ‘Jerusalema Challenge’ to ‘show the world what we are capable of’.

‘There can be no better celebration of our South African-ness than joining the global phenomenon that is Jerusalema dance challenge,’ he said. ‘So I urge all of you to take up this challenge on Heritage Day and show the world what we are capable of.’

And South Africans did just that.

Master KG’s hit track Jerusalema has become what one news report described as a global anthem as the coronavirus pandemic continues to grip the world.

Fittingly, health minister Zweli Mkhize and his team were quick to demonstrate their moves.

But they were not alone.

Law enforcement officers took up the challenge …

So did court officials.

And scores of ordinary people did, too

The enthusiasm proved infectious.

Sometimes with unanticipated consequences.

And not only in South Africa.

Even puppets – courtesy of a skillful puppeteer – showed how it’s done.
