Many South Africans are turning to guns to protect themselves against crime and insecurity in the country, reports EWN.

While the anti-gun advocacy group, Gun Free South Africa, says there is still a sharp difference of opinion among South Africans on the virtue of carrying or owning a gun, women’s empowerment group, Girls on Fire, is encouraging more gun-uptake among women.

The EWN report focused on an event at which dozens of people, mostly women of colour, gathered to practise target shooting at the Rooikraal shooting range south of Johannesburg, as a result of their ever-growing safety fears.

Figures on the number of guns in South Africa are sketchy, according to the report. It is estimated that there are at least 4.5 million legal guns in the country, with a similar number of illegal weapons.
