Gauteng Health MEC, Nomathemba Mokgethi, in a written reply to a question by Jack Bloom, shadow MEC for health for the DA in the province, confirmed that the CEO of Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Hospital (CMJH), Gladys Bogoshi, is also the Acting CEO of Tembisa Hospital.

Bogoshi is one of two officials in the department who perform two jobs because they are acting in another position to their normal job.

Bogoshi was appointed as the acting CEO of Tembisa Hospital after the Health Ombudsman’s report on the death of Shonisani Lethole led to the suspension of the CEO, Dr Lekopane Mogaladi.

Mokgethi says that “Both officials have the ability to manage both posts, there is no effect on performance, they possess both management and technical aptitude and the capability to carry out both functions adequately.”

Bloom does not share Mokgethi’s confidence particularly because Bogoshi’s competence and accountability for the fire at CMJH are being questioned. Both CMJH and Tembisa Hospital need a full-time CEO who can concentrate on fixing the deep-rooted problems at both hospitals, he said. Bloom expressed his grave concern over Bogoshi replacing Dr Barney Selebano as CEO. He raised this concern in January 2013.

Bogoshi had been CEO of the Helen Joseph Hospital which was very poorly run and deteriorated under her leadership.

“She should have been fired long ago, but will now run a much larger and more complex hospital. Dr Selebano did his best under very adverse conditions and was respected by all the staff for his open approach. Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi was very poorly advised in choosing Mrs Bogoshi who is not even a qualified doctor”, said Bloom. Bogoshi is a physiotherapist.
