A Florida man who has been arrested more than 40 times previously on 142 separate charges was arrested again last week after a tense 12-hour standoff with police.

Walter Brois, who is 51 years old, was released from prison last year after serving an 11-year sentence. A few days before his standoff with police, he is also accused of holding a gun to a woman’s head in Pasco County Florida.

The standoff with police began on Wednesday evening when a police officer was investigating a stolen car report at a motel. The officer claims he encountered Brois entering the stolen vehicle, and ordered him to stop, but Brois did not listen, so the officer attempted to taser him twice, with no effect.

Brois allegedly attempted to drive off whilst the officer was still holding onto the car and was forced to let go to avoid serious injury.

The police pursed Brois to a nearby hotel where he barricaded himself in a room on the 4th storey. Police evacuated the hotel and asked Brois to come out and surrender. Brois allegedly told police that he wouldn’t come out and they would have to kill him.

After 12 hours of negotiations, the police decided to enter and arrest him. Police fired 50 rounds of tear gas into the room and a SWAT team breached the hotel door with explosives. Police fired beanbag rounds at Brois, who was wrapped in blankets on the bed, and arrested him.

Boris has previously served three periods in prison for battery, grand theft, trafficking in stolen property and fleeing from law enforcement.

He is awaiting trial.
