Supra Mahumapelo, the former premier of North West, has been suspended by the African National Congress (ANC) for five years.

The party’s North West provincial disciplinary commission suspended Mahumapelo as well as acting provincial secretary of the ANC Women’s League, Bitsa Lekopane.

They were suspended for allegedly holding a parallel party rally in December 2020, close to an official ANC party rally, aimed at causing disunity in the province.

Mahumapelo, who was Premier of North West from 2014 to 2018, now serves as a Member of Parliament. As a result of his suspension he will now also have to step down from Parliament.

According to News24 Mahumapelo will have to undergo a mentorship programme under former ANC leader and South African president, Thabo Mbeki, for three years.

Lekopane will undertake a similar mentoring programme.
