Hage Geingob, the President of Namibia, has tested positive for Covid-19, according to reports. His wife, Monica Geingob, has also caught the virus.

According to official Namibian government reports the couple were said to be in ‘good spirits’ and were currently in isolation.

A number of African leaders have died after contracting the virus, including the President of Tanzania, John Magufuli; Burundian President, Pierre Nkurunziza; and the Prime Minister of eSwatini (Swaziland), Ambrose Dlamini.

In South Africa the most high-profile politician to die after contracting the virus was probably Jackson Mthembu, a former spokesman for the African National Congress, who was serving as Minister in the Presidency at the time of his death.

At the time of writing Namibia had had over 50 000 confirmed cases of Covid-19 with 789 deaths attributed to the disease.
