A 2021 BrandMapp report on Thursday said that a higher number of South Africans than before were relying on multiple sources of income to sustain themselves.

The report found that 35% of middle-class South Africans surveyed had more than one income stream and did not rely only on their salary. In 2019 63% of people said their salary was their only income, this number shrank to 59% at the beginning of 2020 and this year has shrunk to 54%.

The report’s authors said that middle class South Africans were increasingly having to seek out new sources of income to make ends meet.
